CHAIRMANS COMMENTS
By Dennis Kazmierzak

If you are, on-line, check out http://www.ncrs-rmc.org This is our new effort at communications in the cyber world of the Corvette enthusiast. Bob Davis has spent untold hours preparing the Web Page for our membership and all those other interested parties. The Newsletter is currently published in this space, for those that have access. At some point soon, we would like those members who have access to the Internet, to receive their Newsletters only through the Web Page. This will greatly cut down our costs to print and mail the Newsletter. The information is the same, with the addition of pictures and some other neat stuff. Our UK members can pick this up and communicate back to us via the Web Contact. This is a great way to do business. If you have any comments, please e-mail, call or write me. DJKazmierzak@worldnet.att.net    (303) 697-8428.

Since our last meeting, we have had two other occasions to get together for automotive related activities. The first being the Chapter activity of participation in the Polar Bear Swap Meet on January 31st. Several members pitched in to help with this event to generate funds for the Chapter. We collected approximately $1000.00 for the members selling items with about $70.00 going into the bank for the Chapter. This was not as good as we did last year, but the weather turned bad, causing a lot of people to leave or not show up. Save your stuff for next year, because we’ll do it again. This is always a good way to start the year, especially when you can look at parts in the winter inside where it’s warm and dry.

The second event was another swap meet, the Tri-State, held at the National Western Complex. This is a bigger event, but not as fruitful for us as the Polar Bear. This swap meet is just a big indoor junk yard. I had some luck and found some valve covers I’ve been looking for. Other also came away with treasures we can sell next year at the Polar Bear. This is called "recycling". I buy it one year, and sell it to you next year.

The Chairman’s a Master
By Dennis Kazmierzak

Roy Sinor sent out the judging award points to all NCRS members this past month. I was quite pleased to receive my notification as I reached the 10.6 level. This was my goal when it was first announced several years ago that the Master Judge was established. It’s taken me 15 years to make it, but it’s worth it. The Corvettes you get to see and touch, the people you meet and friends you make are the prime points of any social-technical organization. I use the word social-technical because we are a technical focused organization, but we are also social. Without the people and the relationships we would have nothing. With now reaching this level, Master Judge, I will take on a different roll in the NCRS, and that is as Roy defined it in the Restorer. I will be focused on teaching others and helping you get to the 10.0. This began this past year when we instituted the judging schools on Bowtie and Survivor Corvettes. We always look for this and may not recognize it. Hopefully, RMC members will in the future.

Hot Rod Power Tour
By Dennis Kazmierzak

At the February meeting, Chris Watson brought to our attention the Hot Rod Magazine "Power Tour". According to Chris, the featured Marquee this year is the Corvette. The tour starts in Los Angeles on May 7, and will be coming through Colorado May 9 in Grand Junction, and May 10 in Denver. The event in Denver will be at Bandimere Speedway. Jeff Rinehart has offered his suite (#401) at Bandimere as the RMC hospitality reception room for this event. If you are planning on attending this event, stop by to see Jeff and the crew. You can join or dorp off the tour at any time, or end up with the tour in Pontiac, Michigan on May 16-17. You can find more on this subject (and pre-registration information) in the March edition of Hot Rod Magazine. Check it out!

Our club general meetings are the third (3rd) Saturday of every month, at CORVETTE CITY, beginning at 11:00 AM, unless otherwise posted.

Racing
The Council of Motorsports Clubs – Rocky Mountain Region (CMC-RMR) is hosting a 2-day Auto Cross at Second Creek Raceway on May 23 and 24. It is racing against a clock (not wheel to wheel) with essentially SCCA Classes, as well as a Vintage Class. It is a "Run what you brung" type of group…you will see the daily grocery getters as well as race prepared, and everything in between. Several of our members belong to this organization, and compete with our Corvettes and Dwarf Cars. If you are interested in participating, you will need to pre-register soon, as it is limited in size and very popular. The Raceway is located near DIA, off of I-70 and Tower Road. A Concession Stand is on premises for those wanting to purchase food and drink. Contact Reed Merritt for more information. (303) 526-9153 or E-Mail at rmerrit1@ix.netcom.com

Publications
By Dennis Kazmierzak

I’ve been reading Classic Auto Restorer for about two years. If you do your own restoration, or want to, but don’t know how, you should subscribe to this magazine. It’s not cheap. The cost is $27.97 per year, or $44.00 for 2 years.

When I first started reading it, they were doing an article on a ’67 BB Roadster restoration. Some of the things they were covering were not to NCRS standards, but the car was a driver and the owner was happy doing the job the way he wanted it. The article pointed out that research is important, as he ended up doing some things twice. Knowing where to buy your parts and what you are getting, are important to a good top notch job. It parallels what we teach in the Tech. Sessions and what we preach in the general discussions at our meetings.

If you are interested in getting this, call 800 / 365-4421.

FROM THE JUDGING CHAIRMAN
By Jack Humphrey

BOWTIE

In January, we acquainted ourselves again with Bowtie judging procedures. While this form of NCRS campaign is limited to National Convention meets, by invitation, we grouped at Mike Bogan’s garage and did a pro-forma Bowtie inspection of a late ‘63 Z-06 convertible that HAS been invited to this year’s National.

Our purpose was to familiarize ourselves with the basic judging procedures used in Bowtie assessment. While traditional Flight Judging manuals are used, only component originality counts, and there is no Operation’s Check. So, there’s a potential to win honors in four categories -- Interior, Exterior, Mechanical and Chassis. This means a Corvette can garner recognition in one, two, three or all four areas. Hence, we describe Bowtie winners as "n" Star cars based on which of the four categories a car musters recognition.

In traditional Flight Judging, there is little/no disassembly of the car being judged and some items (E.g. transmission) are specifically not reviewed. Those attending our Bowtie Judging School had a chance to observe the differences in Bowtie examination. They saw the car was placed on jack stands for an unobstructed view of the chassis and power train. Also, the unfamiliar "burp" of air tools could be heard as wheels were removed to gain access to this Corvette’s front and rear brake assemblies.

This was a school and the scoring results were strictly NCRS "unofficial". But, we concluded the car had Two Star Bowtie potential in Mechanical and Chassis categories. It will be interesting to see how the car fares under real McCoy Bowtie examination at this Summer’s National Convention!

PAYBACK

If you haven’t registered for the Western Regional in Albuquerque, New Mexico (April 2-4), you’ve missed the cutoff. This doesn’t mean you can’t attend or can’t register your Corvette, it simply means a late registration fee will apply....

The folks from our sister Chapter in New Mexico threw RMC a LOT of support at last year’s Regional in Steamboat. They brought roughly half of our Judging Field and we owe them. It’s payback time!

I’ve sent registration papers in on my ‘71, loaned my trailer to Martin Egan so he can PV his ‘77, and know of several other RMC members that are planning on making the trip (including Barry Morris from the UK). Come on folks, rally round and plan to join our April Fool’s Day caravan to Albuquerque!

JOE

The highlight of the Summer should be Flight ‘98, our UK sister Chapter’s first NCRS concourse outside North America. The stake’s in the ground on dates. August 1st and 2nd will see the Flight ‘98 activities just North of London. The weekend before (July 25-26) sports a major British Vintage Race event (Coy’s) and the UK Chapter has made arrangements for infield seating. In between the two weekends, the CCC UK concourse event is scheduled.

This makes a perfect opportunity for Corvette enthusiasts to visit Jolly Olde England (JOE) on a ten day vacation basis! The UK Chapter has made special hotel provisions for us, while Dennis Kazmierzak and I are working on group air travel arrangements. As of today, I count 10-20 RMC members who’ve expressed interest in going and the wife/"other" participation level appears high. Stay tuned for more information on air arrangements and let Dennis or I know if you want to play with us in JOE....

Membership Report
By Jon Whiteley

I’m getting settled into the Membership position with a lot of credit going to past Membership Chair Reed Merritt. Reed had things pretty well organized for me. Thank you Reed.

Well there’s good news and there’s bad news. The good news is that in the first eight weeks of 1998 we’ve gained 9 new members. WELCOME!! This compares to a total of 20 new members for all of 1997. I’m hopeful we’ll have increasing involvement in our assorted activities this year. The turnout at the meeting at Corvette City on 2/21 was the best I’ve seen in the past year or so – some new faces and quite a few a "old ones" as well.

The bad news has to do with the fact that as of February 24th, we’ve had only 49% of our 1997 Membership cough up their renewal dues. C’mon people, it’s March already. If you haven’t yet renewed, get your check for $20.00 to
Joe Orecchio at 6512 Urban Court, Arvada CO 80004. Thank you.

Lastly, I have a number of member nametags made, but undelivered. I’ll try to get them to those members at the next meeting, but would appreciate it if you could identify yourself since I don’t know everybody, especially without your nametag! Hope to see you all Saturday, March 21st at the next meeting.

NOTE: If you have not renewed – this is your last Newsletter!! Included with this Newsletter, is the Application Form…get it sent in as soon as possible.
